Our Teachers

Teachers guide classes with a ratio of 2 adults for 10 children.

Mary Ann Barrow, founder and director, has more than 20 years of teaching experience. With a degree in early childhood education and administration, Mary Ann began her career teaching at a Halifax preschool and kindergarten. She went on to open a preschool and child care center and then established The Children's Garden in 1998. She is the mother of three children.

With a background in elementary education, Ellen Fernandes has been working with young children for 18 years and has been with The Children's Garden for 15 of them. She is the mother of two grown children and one grandchild.

Sonja Flood has a degree in early childhood education and has been with The Children's Garden for four years. Sonja is the mother of three children.

Mary Ann, Ellen and Sonja regularly attend workshops and continuing education seminars so that they can offer the most successful and engaging teaching techniques and programs to students. Knowledgeable and creative, all three teachers share their passion for teaching and joy of working with children as well as their nurturing and patient personalities.

Our Setting

Set upon a pastoral working farm with expansive views, The Children's Garden schoolhouse is a fully operational farm providing invaluable, hands-on learning experiences. Throughout the year, students make connections between classroom lessons and the world around them by going on nature walks where they collect items for projects, by participating in ways to take care of the earth, and by visiting the farm animals-including pigs, goats, sheep, and a student favorite, Dapple, the farm's donkey.

The fenced playground, where the children play almost every day (weather-permitting), abuts the farmland. And, from the schoolhouse windows, students view the changing fields throughout each season.

Hours of Operation

Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with extended day options available from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Depending on age, preschoolers generally either attend the Monday, Wednesday, Friday class or the Tuesday, Thursday class. However, some children attend other combinations of these days.
